IMAGE Project

Development and Implementation of a European Guideline and Training Standards for Diabetes Prevention

The IMAGE project has been established to improve the ability of European Union (EU) countries to prevent type 2 diabetes. Effective primary prevention is the key to reducing the epidemic in type 2 diabetes.

The IMAGE project will help to address this through the development of four specific objectives. Implementing these project achievements will realistically enhance the capability of responding rapidly to the drastic increase of burden related to type 2 diabetes. They will also be of major importance to prevent diabetes and promote health through addressing health determinants across all policies and activities in Europe, thus reducing existing health inequalities.

IMAGE is being led by Dr Peter Schwarz (Dresden) and Professor Jaakko Tuomilehto (Finland). It is one of the largest initiatives to be granted funding through the ‘EU call for Proposals’ in 2006. The project commenced on 1 June 2007 and will complete in May 2010.

32 partner organisations from 16 countries are involved in IMAGE, including the International Diabetes Federation Europe, Federation of European Nurses in Diabetes (FEND), Primary Care Diabetes Europe (PCDE) and the Diabetes Prevention Forum.

The objectives of IMAGE are to develop:

  1. European practice-oriented guidelines for the primary prevention of type 2 diabetes
  2. A European curriculum for the training of prevention managers
  3. European standards for the assessment, monitoring and quality reporting of type 2 diabetes prevention
  4. A European e-health training portal
