SWEET Project

SWEET: Better control in paediatric and adolescent diabetes in the EU: working to create centres of reference

The main objective of SWEET is to improve secondary prevention, diagnosis and control of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents by supporting the development of centres of reference (CORs) for paediatric and adolescent diabetes services across the EU.

SWEET is based on a partnership of established European and national diabetes organisations, involving patients, carers, specialists, GPs, educators, nurses, dietitians, psychologists and policymakers.

The SWEET project commenced in April 2008 and will finish in March 2011.

The project has five specific objectives:

  1. Strengthen the knowledge base regarding the status of paediatric and adolescent diabetes and related care in the EU
  2. Enhance and promote equal standards of treatment and care in paediatric and adolescent diabetes and related care in the EU
  3. Improve control of diabetes and prevent complications by means of age appropriate patient education programmes
  4. Support healthcare professionals in providing high quality specialised care to children and adolescents with diabetes
  5. Stimulate the development of centres of reference for paediatric and adolescent diabetes services in Europe
