DIAMAP: A road map for diabetes research in Europe

On 1 April 2008, EURADIA was awarded an FP7 grant from the European Commission (Health-F2-2008-200701) for an innovative two-year project to guide a Road Map for Diabetes Research in Europe, called DIAMAP.

DIAMAP is a response of EURADIA (www.EURADIA.org), an Alliance encompassing the major European diabetes stakeholder organizations, ensuring contact and credibility with all fields of diabetes research. EURADIA has a unique and high political profile at the European level and has been instrumental in highlighting the need for increased and better coordinated funding for diabetes research.

The mission of DIAMAP is to undertake a wide survey of the current European diabetes research landscape, from which expert opinion can identify gaps and highlight strengths, to guide a Road Map strategy for diabetes research in Europe.

The objectives for DIAMAP are:

  • To undertake a survey of research activities and funding for research, both public and private, at regional, national and European level
  • To create a diabetes research database from the survey of European and limited worldwide data; intended to be sustained by EURADIA after initial capital from the EU Commission
  • To identify gaps, strengths, weaknesses and opportunities in diabetes research in Europe by expert analysis
  • To develop a final Road Map report by an overarching Expert Advisory Board (EAB) to outline strategy for diabetes research in Europe, taking into account different scenarios, including the Innovative Medicines Initiative
